There was a time when the strength of a community was not measured by the possessions of its men, but by the gifts they carried within them.

Among our people, different men were entrusted with different abilities. Some carried the wisdom to pray when the rains disappeared. Some possessed the courage and discipline required when danger came to the community. Others were builders, organisers, providers and visionaries, men who could see beyond the difficulties of their generation and lay foundations for those who would come after them.

The warrior was never simply a man of war.

He was a man of purpose.

Today, the battlefield has changed.

The dangers confronting African communities are no longer always visible. We face psychological warfare, economic pressure, fractured families, cultural disconnection, substance abuse, unemployment, hopelessness and a growing distance between ourselves and the values that once gave our communities structure.

And in this changing battlefield, the question is no longer:

“Can you fight?”

It is:

“What are you fighting for?”
